With the upcoming challenges of globalization and free market, countries that did not place an emphasis on the quality awareness and culture, will not be able to earn its share in the international market. Countries that were once profitable stable markets for products are now competitors due to globalization. Industry cannot relax but must continuously strive to improve its competitive edge. There is no doubt that international standards on quality management have revolutionized the thinking on quality. It is vital therefore that commerce and industrial sectors in the country should adopt and implement quality management tools and techniques in their respective organizations. Undoubtedly,, a slow but steady cultured change is taking place as most of the organizations both manufacturing and service sectors are striving to achieve ISO 9000 certification, however, stat of awareness remains poor.  Government of Pakistan, Ministry of Science and Technology, has very rightly and timely formulated and evolved national quality policy in all sectors of economy. This policy will develop an environment in which companies in Pakistan can achieve excellence for the benefit of the society and will also enhance country's reputation as a provider of quality products and services in the local and international markets.

Keeping in view the modern need of industrial and business sectors, University of the Punjab established Quality Management Division at the Institute of Chemical Engineering and Technology in January 2002 and launched postgraduate quality management courses first time in the country. These courses have been specially designed for engineers, managers and supervisors to prepare them for administrative and managerial positions and equip them with latest tools of quality and production management. This program offers a comprehensive package that covers full range of quality, production and management concept. Undoubtedly the qualified graduate of this unique program will improve the quality of national products, services and will enhance level of export.
